I think 'Wagan' is a official spelling.

Thanks fuzzball for keep looking into this.

However I don't see this being more official than "Wagan" being displayed in-game, as reported by NGEfreak.

Even then I still think both are results of wrong or, maybe better, more "relaxed" romanization rules. I'd say it's a cosmetic decision, like romanized "Wagan" looking better than "Wagyan". But according to our naming convention, title reads "Wagyan".

Unless a reason is found to explain why they used "ギャ" instead of "ガ" if they actually wanted to sound "Wagan", I'll keep thinking that "Wagyan" is the correct romanization for our DATs.

As a further reason supporting the "Wagyan" romanization, note that this game seems to be about "screaming" words to hit enemies. The giongo for screaming/squawking/squealing is

ぎゃあぎゃあ (gyaagyaa)

while "ガーガー" (gaagaa) is the giongo for the "quack" of a duck, and the player character looks like a tiny lizard, not a duck.

I think 'Wagan' isn't Romaji, it's a coined word like Xevious.
Xevious isn't 'Zebiusu'.

I don't think that is a comparable example. You can't really write "Xevious" in a different way using kana, if you are actually trying to sound "Xevious". Plus contrary to Wagyan series, "Xevious" is used even on Japanese boxarts.

What do you think of "Waganizer"?
kazumi213 » 2009-05-08 05:50:55

I honestly think that it is not conclusive. In the previous discussion I posted the official URL for NDS game and it is using "Wagyan".

As I said before, NGEfreak also noted that "Wagan" is displayed at some point in the game. I still think both are result of more relaxed romanization rules than ours.

My question remains: if they want to sound Wagan/Waganizer why not simply use ワガン / ワガナイザー?

I say again. 'Wagan' isn't Romaji.
It's my only idea.
