I removed the Rising Sun intro from Crash Nitro Kart and I got a different CRC32. Mine is 03925772. The difference perhaps is that I filled the rom with FFs and I left the string "bokusai!" (or something like that) at the end of the rom, because I think that it belongs there (like in "The Lion King").

I used GBAIR, which we found is better than GBATool...
Why should a string "bokusai!" should be included in a US developed game? (Crash is developed from universal studios)??
bye!

Look into "The Lion King (U) and (E)". There's exactly the same string at the end of the rom! Sure, this doesn't make sense, but it's 100% the ORIGINAL with this string.
ATMB » 2003-11-26 13:03:18

uhm...I understand...hw it's really strange!
Dopefish » 2003-11-26 13:07:45

Another example is "Tony Hawk's Underground (U)". There is the word "l33tstring" at the end of the rom. I think that is has nothing to do with the functionality of the rom, but the developers must have had something in minde doing this... nevertheless the roms work and that's what we want?!
ATMB » 2003-11-26 13:09:00

l33tstring?!!?? this sounds too much like a scene sentence....
They use all thos "l33t" "31337" and so on....
Who knows....are you sure that in clean dump the string is present? Or that dump could have been modified by release group?
Dopefish » 2003-11-26 13:15:11

I checked the CRC32 and it's the same as in the GBADAT database, I think. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I always look into every rom I downloaded and I know damn well how they have to look like. First I wasn't sure if it is a scene string or not, but as you can see (Lion King) the developers make a lot of crap to confuse us... ;-)
ATMB » 2003-11-26 14:30:58

:) OK :D
well then, so should I use a patch to get correct CRC32? :D
bye!
bjim217 » 2003-11-26 14:51:35

for consistency should we try and use gbair when it does work and rely on bigfred and coolhj to patch when it doesnt?
although i take your point about gettingthe 'pure' dumps.
guess it depends on whether gbair does its job --- i think its a great tool and we should try and stick with it for consistency where possible imo...
an interesting topic for sure!!

So which CRC will be included in the DAT ?
Dopefish » 2003-11-27 12:48:55

I hope the DAT will be updated soon!!! Coolhj and/or BigFred will find out which CRC is the right one. They always do...
coolhj » 2003-11-27 14:30:00

I doubt this strange string too. May be it is added by dumper,or originally by developer. No one knows. If we ignore this string, CRC 50942D64 is ok. if we left this string, then the crc should be 03925772.But I don't know which is the correct way.
If any one could redump one of these rom which contain this strange string , and let us know whether the string belongs to the original rom , that will be a great help.
lessram » 2003-11-27 15:03:34

Remember the original dump that included a picture hidden somewhere ?
Developers might like tagging their name/alias too ;)
