Despite the internal ROM name, "2020 Super Baseball (USA)", much like the USA Sega Genesis version, was trademarked and marketed as "Super Baseball 2020". The text on page 1 of the game's instruction manual reads "Thank you for purchasing Super Baseball 2020™ from Tradewest for your Super Nintendo Entertainment System." Page 23 of the manual reads "Super Baseball 2020™ players perform at a level several times that of ordinary players due to the special equipment they wear." The back cover of the manual reads "Super Baseball 2020™ ©1991 SNK Corporation. Licensed to Tradewest, Inc. by SNK Corporation." The back of the game's box reads "SUPER BASEBALL 2020™: You're traveling into the future of baseball and you won't want to come back!" and "SUPER BASEBALL 2020™ ©1991 TRADEWEST, INC. LICENSED TO TRADEWEST, INC. BY SNK". Finally, the art on the cartridge end-label reads "Super Baseball 2020™".

Sorry for lateness.

I appreciate that you put so much effort into stating your case, mrpopsicleman!

I'm aware of the internal ROM name, but those have been known to be wrong. The internal ROM name for "Ganpuro - Gun's Proof" says "Gunple." Doesn't mean I'm going to use that, though. Because it's wrong for the game's title.

I'll mull over this and allow others time to do so as well. To be honest, though, the back of the box and the cartridge end label have already decided this in my opinion. Apologies to anyone who has an issue with that.

Thank you.

I actually found an entry in Datomatic's archive where one user already changed this name and another reverted it, saying that end label art commonly make mistakes.

This I also understand. Certain Naruto and Resident Evil games are the proof of that! However, I would like to see more proof of the game's name being 2020 Super Baseball than a mere internal ROM name. As I mentioned, they are also prone to being wrong. No-Intro tending to give priority to box/cart name would still mean the label wins this. Is that not right?

Thank you for replying C. V. Reynolds.

I was the one who brought up the end label art originally on 2015-06-28 in a shoutbox. It was changed by einstein95 on 2015-06-29, but reverted by coraz on 2015-06-30, prompting me to state my case further here. I understand that the game was indeed called "2020 Super Baseball" for the Super Famicom in Japan (as well as the Neo Geo I believe), but that simply wasn't the case in the US. Everything I stated above is clear evidence. Even Nintendo Power magazine called it "Super Baseball 2020" in coverage of the game.

Ultimately, I just want to make sure the name of this game (and any game, for that matter) is accurately preserved in the dat.

@mrpopsicleman I have looked into the manual and it is simply wrong about the "Super Baseball 2020™" occurrences

https://trademarks.justia.com/744/71/2020-super-baseball-74471825.html

the only trademark ever registered is "2020 SUPER BASEBALL"
there has never been any "SUPER BASEBALL 2020" trademark registered in the US

Well, this is likely an example of a game that doesn't really have a clear-cut name. The name could be either one and each has its own cases, most legitimate. I'm unsure if it'll ever be possible to prove the game's name to be one way or the other.

What to do at a time like this? What can be?

Sigh...

Closing this, as there's no clear way to reach a verdict. Thus, it stays as it is for now. If further evidence comes up in the future, let me know.
